On a New Server

Posted September 16th, 2005 by Mike Cherim

So, if you’re seeing this news item, you are viewing the site on the new server.

It’s taken a while to set-up the new servers — more time than we had hoped for, actually — but the job is finally done. To no real surprise we suppose, we were delayed by a company of monkeys (no names are provided to protect the guilty). We did, however, finally find some really great “server farmers” so to speak. Now we’re poised and ready for the long-term hosting of this website, and a long-term position for our web hosting subsidiary, GBHXonline.com and its family of client sites.

Here’s what’s happened: A copy of this site was moved to the new server on September 15th. We tested it and made sure everything was A-okay (it went very smoothly we happily report). Then on the evening of September 16th, we changed the Domain NamerServers (DNS) to which the domain name — GreenMethods.com — is assigned. Once this was done a “propagation” phase began. The internet basically updated itself and showed this domain assigned to the new server, via a new static Internet Protocol (IP) address… think of it as a phone number if you will.

So, if you’re seeing this news item, you are viewing the site on the new server. If you have difficulties with any pages after September 16th, try a hard refresh while you’re on the page (hold Shift while hitting “Refresh”) to see if you’ll clear the problem. If, not, just give it more time. It’ll happen. The propagation phase can take from minutes to days. We are expecting a few hours, being optimistic. During this period, this site may be “off” or slow, or what have you. If the move is complete, if you’re a distributor, you will have to re-login. Same thing if you have a personal style selected from the User Settings page. Sorry about this. If you’re seeing this it means we’re back to normal soon or at least 99.99% so. Please do report any site problem(s) you may uncover by way of our Contact Form. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
