2008 Pricing Updated

Posted December 29th, 2007 by Mike Cherim

Since our 2008 catalog is out there, it was time to update the pricing on this web site to match. Both are done. And in general, on average, our pricing has dropped significantly. Some items stayed the same, and some went up, but these are in response to rising costs or abnormal handling charges (we have to pay). Everything else went down. Some items enough to notice.

Why Spend Millions?

Posted December 24th, 2007 by Mike Cherim

Every year I write at least one anecdote to offer some levity to the otherwise dry subject of biocontrol and integrated pest management. These anecdotes are meant to make you smile, as well as deliver a subtle educational message. I really enjoy writing these; to imagine and produce — it’s fun. Normally the annual story goes in our catalog, but this year we left it out. It is right here so it wasn’t forgotten — just trying to save paper and printing costs. Enjoy:

Our 2008 Catalog’s Available

Posted December 19th, 2007 by Mike Cherim

On schedule, on time, and ready for the new year, our 2008 catalog is now available and ready to be sent to you upon your request. A single copy of the catalog is free (one per address) if you’re located in Canada or the Untied States, all you have to do is ask. We’d send it free to others as well, but most countries cannot buy from us without a permit, and postage costs are outrageous. Thus we have a limit.

Please note: If you’re an existing customer and you ordered from us within the past couple years, we have sent you a copy automatically. Some of you, in fact, may have it already.

Our 2007-2008 Holiday Schedule

Posted December 15th, 2007 by Mike Cherim

The holidays are upon us. We’re a small outfit and we shut down for a week. Even though we communicate this in our catalog and on this site, we do like to remind you of this fact. We know it’s a bit of an inconvenience for some of our customers, and we’re really sorry about that, but we know many are like us and just need to shut down for a few days at least. In our case, shipping of bugs would be impossible anyway, so there’s little incentive to be open.

Red Ladybug, Black Ladybug

Posted December 11th, 2007 by Mike Cherim

Ladybugs are insects, and this means they undergo a complete metamorphosis: hatching from eggs into larvae, then transforming into pupae, and finally emerging as adult beetles. When they first emerge from their snug pupal cocoons, they look like ladybugs in shape and size, but their coloration isn’t yet set; they will typically be a pale orange-yellow or a grayish color. You see, when they first emerge their wing covers, also known as eletra — their shells or modified wing covers if you will — are wet and quite soft. It’s nothing a few hours in the sun won’t fix, though.

Living with Pests on a Warming Planet

Posted December 6th, 2007 by Mike Cherim

In a previous post announcing the return of ladybugs I asked no one in particular if this might happen again next year. I brought up the fact that the possibility does indeed exist because mother nature is having her way with us by way of the unnaturally and unprecedented accelerated rate of global warming. I got an indirect answer to this recently thanks to the Bio-Integral Resource Center (BIRC).
