Since we were recommended as a resource by the author of this book, Ellen Zachos, Storey Publishing sent us a courtesy copy. We’re glad they did because this is an excellent read. The full title is “Down & Dirty! 43 Fun & Funky First-Time Projects & Activities to Get You Gardening” and the title says it all. With emphasis on “Fun & Funky,” this book draws the reader in with its vibe alone. Once in, the writing style will hook you. And if that doesn’t do it, then you will fall prey to the great photographs.
The book’s four main sections are titled and described as follows:
- Down & Dirty Basics
- “Discover techniques how to make your thumb greener”
- Down & Dirty Adventures
- “Explore the world of nature just for the fun of it”
- Down & Dirty Projects
- “Accent your outdoor space and try out your new skills”
- Down & Dirty Plants
- “Find out how cool plants really are”
It’s not a pest control bible, and we’re not recommending you check it out for that, but it is a good reminder that there’s more to the gardening experience than good bugs versus bad. But, that said, if you do buy this book, do be sure to check out the chapter titled “Knowing the Good Bugs from the Bad Bugs.” Also be sure to read the sidebar on page 168 were the author writes (about buying bugs)…
“[…] My favorite is The Green Spot, which is based in New Hampshire. These guys really know their stuff and are generous with their time, helping you figure out which beneficial insects are right for your growing situation. […] — Ellen Zachos
