It’s that time of the year when getting lawn grubs — before they munch turf roots causing yellow patches later or grow into troublesome adults — is priority one. Last year Japanese beetles, as a classic example, laid their eggs in your lawn around attractant plant material. Those eggs hatched and the small larvae began to feed, building reserves for the winter. Now that winter’s over the larvae have resumed their activity and will do so until mid- to late-June. Then they pupate as a segue to adulthood. This plays out the same way, or close to it, for many grubs. You can do something about it, and save money.
Hb Nematodes on Sale
The grubs are still small right now and an easy mark for our Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Hb) nematodes (releasing at the end of the summer is also advantageous). And since Japanese beetles are just an example, and many other grubs share their life cycle, making multiple releases of these refrigerator-storable nematodes in the spring is a wise move. Applying them now, which is very economical, can provide big results later on in the season. Get Hb nematodes on sponges in our shop. (Note: Refrigerator-storable for up to three months so you can buy in bulk saving even more on shipping.)
Milky Spore On Sale
Since we’re into taking down grubs like those pesky Japanese beetle larvae, it wouldn’t hurt to hit them with Bacillus popilliae, also known as milky spore disease (powder), as well. It all depends on whether it’s an ongoing problem or not. Milky spore disease, being living bacteria, provide exceptionally long-term control. B. popilliae take a while to become fully established, though, so at first it is sometimes a good idea to use the nematodes and milky spore jointly. Milky spore powder is available online right now.
