Covering Some Entomology Basics
As some of you may or may not know, I am a contributing photographer at iStockphoto.com, a stock photography site. There approved contributing photographers upload inspected photos for sale to publishers, webmasters, or whoever needs them. To locate the photos they need, these buyers search the 3 million plus image library for a “Best Match” or other criterion based on keywords and phrases. These keywords, for the sake of clearer disambiguation, are mapped to preselected words or phrases. In other words, if I add the keyword “safe,” the system will ask if I mean safe as in safety, or safe as in a hardened box. The system works, though I was recently reminded that it isn’t perfect.

Persimilis Discounted Again
P. persimilis a good all ’round choice…
We’re still hearing from a lot of people suffering from spider mite infestations so once again we have decided to put our popular mite predatory mites, Phytoseiulus persimilis, on sale for a limited time. If you are unlucky enough to have spider mites already, we’re here to help. P. persimilis are a good choice.

Shipping is Ridiculous
Last week was a new customer feedback milestone for us. We often get feedback — we even ask for it a lot — but last week delivered more feedback than we’re accustomed to. We’d love to be able to tell you it was all good, but that wasn’t the case. Five customers did share the good; five told us of their successes this year with biocontrol. They were extremely pleased. Three more, however, complained about shipping. Those three, amazingly, all said the same thing, using the same words: Shipping is Ridiculous.

The Grand Tick Hunt
Last week Massachusetts entomologist and respected tick guru David Simser, PhD, came to visit. He was on a mission: To collect deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis) in predetermined New Hampshire locations and count his catches. Two of these collections/counts were taken right here in Nottingham, NH.

Help With Mites: Stethorus Discounted
We’ve been getting so many calls for spider mite control it’s pretty obvious two-spotted mites are the scourge of 2008, or so it seems. In response to this, we decided to offer the mite-predatory beetle Stethorus punctillum at a discount for a couple of weeks. We chose to discount this species to encourage users to give them a try. So far they have been well received, but even more feedback would be great.
