What it pollinates

Bombus impatiens — the Eastern bumblebee, North America's native commercial pollinator — is the workhorse for buzz-pollinated crops in greenhouses and protected fields. The headliner is greenhouse tomato, where bumblebees replaced hand-vibration with a wand and saved growers thousands of labor hours per acre. They're also the standard for greenhouse cucumber, pepper, eggplant, and other solanaceous and cucurbit vegetables. Outdoors, growers reach for them on blueberries, strawberries, squash, and other small-acreage seed and fruit crops.

What separates bumblebees from honeybees here is buzz pollination: a bumblebee grips a flower's anther cone and vibrates her flight muscles to shake pollen loose through pores. Honeybees can't do that. For tomatoes, peppers, blueberries, eggplant, and any other plant where pollen is released through anther pores, bumblebees are the only domesticated bee that does the job. They also work in conditions honeybees skip — low light, cooler temperatures, the dim corners of a greenhouse — which is why a single hive holds production through cloudy weeks and shoulder-season starts.

How it works

Each hive ships as a fully self-sustaining colony — queen, workers, brood, and a pre-stocked sugar reservoir. The Medium hive arrives with 55+ workers and stays active for at least 6 weeks. The Standard hive arrives with roughly 75 workers and runs 6–8 weeks. No feeding, no swarm management, no daily intervention — the colony comes pre-balanced for the working life of the hive.

The colony operates on a typical bumblebee social cycle — the queen lays eggs that become workers, the workers forage for pollen and nectar to feed the brood, and the colony's energy output depends on the worker headcount at any given moment. Greenhouse conditions sustain the colony comfortably. Significantly warmer temperatures (above ~85°F) slow foraging and can suppress activity entirely; cooler temperatures merely slow workers down without stopping them. Buzz frequency, foraging pattern, and pollen-gathering behavior all stay consistent under low-light interior conditions where honeybees lose orientation.

Receiving the hive

Place the hive in the crop immediately on receipt. Do not open the door for at least an hour after placement — the bees will be agitated from shipping, and the hour lets them settle before they fly. The hive is fully self-sustaining; there's no sugar to add and no maintenance to do. Just place, wait, open.

Hive placement & installation

Greenhouse / interior

Place the hive off the ground on a stand, bench, or hive table where it won't be disturbed. Avoid spots where fans blow on it directly, where irrigation can hit it, or where harvest traffic runs past the entrance every few minutes. Wait one hour after placement, then open the door so the workers can start foraging.

Outdoor / field

Outdoors, the hive needs protection from rain and direct sun. A half-sheet of plywood angled over the top is enough cover. Same one-hour rule applies before opening. Position the entrance so workers fly into open canopy rather than against a wall or hedgerow.

Ant exclusion

Ants will rob the hive's sugar reservoir and disrupt foraging. Wrap a band of sticky tape or sticky-barrier compound around the legs of whatever the hive is sitting on (table leg, post, stand) so ants can't climb up. This is the most common reason a hive underperforms.

Monitoring & advisories

Monitor for
  • Worker activity at the hive entrance during peak crop hours — steady in-and-out flow is the health signal.
  • Fruit set in the days following placement — the only outcome that matters. Tomato cluster weight, blueberry set rate, pepper retention.
  • Bite-mark "bruising" on the anther cones of tomato flowers (where workers grip to buzz) — visible evidence pollination is happening.
  • Hive weight or activity decline near the end of the run (6–8 week life expectancy depending on hive size).
Advisories
  • Bee-safe pesticide windows. Close the hive door before applying any pesticide labelled with a bee restriction. Keep closed for the full re-entry interval plus a safety margin (consult the label).
  • Bumblebees are docile if undisturbed but will sting if threatened. Avoid sudden movements near the hive; don't wear bright clothing in the work area — the colors can attract foragers.
  • Allergic responders should not work near an active hive. Train all workers on hive location and the warning signs of a defensive bee.
  • Greenhouse temperature management matters — sustained heat above ~85°F suppresses foraging. Run vents and shading as you would for the crop.
  • Don't combine with broad-spectrum systemic insecticides applied via root drench in the active foraging window — bees pick up residue from nectar.

Bombus impatiens can be used in all U.S. states except: Oregon (prohibited), Washington (screened structures only), and California (state-issued permit required — California State Permit Form 66-026, from the CA Department of Food and Agriculture). Check the current rules with your state regulator before ordering.

Colony life cycle

A commercial Bombus impatiens colony is annual. The queen founds the colony, workers carry the foraging load, and the cycle wraps with the production of new reproductives. The hive you receive is a colony in mid-cycle, ready to forage.

Disclosures

Live-product policy. Bumblebee hives ship live and time-sensitive. Replacements or credits are offered for compromised shipments when issues are reported within 24 hours of receipt — and before any organisms suspected of viability issues are released into the crop. Don't discard the hive; you may be asked to return it for analysis.

State regulations. Use of Bombus impatiens is restricted or prohibited in some U.S. states (Oregon: prohibited; Washington: screened structures only; California: state permit required). Verify current regulations with your state department of agriculture before ordering. Buyer is responsible for compliance.

Stinging-insect safety. Bumblebees are docile when undisturbed but capable of stinging. Workers near the hive should know its location, recognize defensive behavior, and have a plan if anyone in the operation has a known bee-sting allergy.
