What beneficial nematodes target
Beneficial nematodes are microscopic, soil-dwelling roundworms in the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis. They’re entomopathogenic — meaning they kill insects — and per UF/IFAS they infect and kill more than 200 species of soil-dwelling insect larvae and pupae. The three species sold under the NEMAforce™ line cover the range: Steinernema feltiae (SF) for fungus gnat larvae, shore flies, mushroom flies, thrips pupae, and early-season grubs; Steinernema carpocapsae (SC) for surface-dwelling pests — shore fly larvae, fleas, cutworms, sod webworms, billbugs, and several weevils and borers; and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (HB) for deep-soil scarab grubs — Japanese beetle, June beetle, European chafer, and Northern masked chafer.
These nematodes are not plant parasites and they don’t harm earthworms, beneficial insects, pets, or people. UMass Extension and Cornell NYSIPM both classify them as low-risk biocontrols suitable for organic certification. They’re the right choice when a soil pest — grub, gnat, weevil, borer, flea — is causing damage and you don’t want a chemical residue in the root zone.

How they kill
The infective juvenile is the only stage that hunts. It locates a host insect by detecting carbon dioxide and heat gradients in the soil, then enters through a natural opening: the mouth, the spiracles, the anus, or (for HB only) through the cuticle directly. Inside the body cavity, the nematode releases its symbiotic bacterium — Xenorhabdus for Steinernema, Photorhabdus for Heterorhabditis — and the bacteria kill the host within 24 to 72 hours. The nematodes then reproduce inside the dead insect for several days. When the food source is exhausted, a new wave of infective juveniles emerges and starts hunting again. Visible pest reductions usually show up within two weeks of the first application.
Ambush vs cruiser — pick by pest behavior
Foraging strategy is the most important call in a nematode program. Per UF/IFAS and UMass Extension:
- Ambush (S. carpocapsae) — stays near the soil surface in a sit-and-wait posture. Best against mobile, surface-dwelling pests like shore fly larvae and flea larvae that walk past on their own.
- Intermediate (S. feltiae) — cruises shallow (0–3 in). Best against active, shallow pests like fungus gnat larvae and thrips pupae, and tolerates cooler soils than the other two.
- Cruiser (H. bacteriophora) — actively searches deeper soil (1–7 in). Best against sedentary pests — especially scarab grubs — that won’t come to the predator.
Using the wrong strategy is the most common reason a nematode application underperforms. SC drenched into a lawn won’t find Japanese beetle grubs feeding six inches down; HB sprayed onto greenhouse bench-top algae won’t kill shore fly larvae. Match the species to where the pest actually lives.

Storage and shelf life
Most beneficial nematodes ship on sponges or in gel-filler trays and need refrigeration — but never freezing — until use. Unopened, they hold roughly two weeks at 40°F (5°C). Once the tray is opened and mixed with water, apply immediately. Don’t use product past its expiration date or product that has been stored incorrectly. The product is REI = 0 (zero restricted entry interval) and compatible with organic certification programs. Newer shelf-stable S. feltiae formulations using a carrier bead are starting to appear on the market and can remain viable up to 12 months without refrigeration — check the label.
How to apply
Pre-irrigate and time the application
Water the area thoroughly first, before any nematodes go down — moist soil moves the juveniles into the root zone and protects them from desiccation. Apply early morning, late evening, or on an overcast day. UV light kills the juveniles within minutes of exposure, so direct midday sun is non-negotiable.
Mix and disperse
Use cool, non-chlorinated water. Fill the spray vessel or watering can halfway, start agitation, add the tray contents, and bring up to final volume while agitating. Apply through a watering can, backpack sprayer, hose-end sprayer, or irrigation system. Remove any filter finer than 50 mesh — the juveniles will clog smaller mesh. Standard equipment handles pressures up to 300 psi without damaging them.
Water in and hold moisture
After application, water lightly to wash the nematodes into the soil profile. Keep the media or soil moist for at least two weeks so the juveniles can move, find hosts, and reproduce in the dead insects. For heavy infestations, plan a second application 7–10 days after the first. Application rates scale with treated area: roughly 5 million juveniles per up to 1,600 sq. ft., 10 million per 3,600 sq. ft., or 50 million per up to one acre — always defer to the specific product label.
Monitoring & advisories
- Discolored, dead larvae in the treated area within a few days. HB-infected grubs turn orange-red (from the Photorhabdus pigment); SC-infected hosts run yellow to tan; SF-infected insects darken to tan.
- Falling adult counts on yellow sticky cards above benches and pots (for fungus gnats and shore flies) within 1–2 weeks of the first application.
- Fewer larvae when you scrape back the top inch of media in propagation areas, or when you cut soil samples in turf and check the root zone.
- Infective juveniles are large enough to see with a 10× hand lens on a wet surface. They look like clear, comma-shaped threads about 0.5–1 mm long.
- Plant recovery — vigor returns to grub-damaged lawns and stippled root systems as the pest pressure drops.
- UV light is lethal. Apply early morning, late evening, or under cloud cover — never under midday sun. Same for storage: keep trays out of direct light.
- Soil moisture has to hold for at least two weeks. If irrigation goes off or rainfall is below normal, schedule supplemental water through the establishment window.
- Soil temperature outside each species’ window cuts efficacy. SF tolerates the coolest soils (59–79°F), SC works above 60°F up to about 83°F, HB needs the warmest range (65–83°F). Use a soil thermometer at application depth.
- These are entomopathogenic nematodes, not the root-knot or filarial nematodes that damage plants and animals — commercial NEMAforce™ products are rigorously identified by species. Reputable suppliers carry only the beneficial species.
- Some broad-spectrum insecticide residues kill nematodes outright. Allow at least four weeks after a broad-spectrum insecticide before applying, and avoid combining in tank-mix with adulticides unless the label confirms compatibility.

Life cycle
All three NEMAforce™ species share the same nematode-bacterium life cycle: free-living infective juvenile in the soil, host entry, in-vivo development through several stages while feeding on the dead host, then emergence of new infective juveniles. Full cycle length depends on species and soil conditions — roughly 8 weeks for HB, 15 weeks for SC, and up to 20 weeks for SF under typical greenhouse conditions.
Disclosures
Live-product policy. Beneficial Insectary works to guarantee the live delivery of fresh organisms. Replacements or credits are offered for compromised shipments when customers report issues or concerns within 24 hours — before any organisms suspected of viability issues are released. Don’t discard the product; you may be asked to return the shipment for analysis.
Establishment of biocontrol agents. Many variables — pesticide applications, watering practices, storage methods, and other cultural, physical, or mechanical controls — can shift biocontrol-agent and pest populations. Long- or short-term establishment after release can’t be guaranteed, and refunds, discounts, or credits are not offered on products that have already been applied.
