What it targets

Amblyseius cucumeris (updated taxonomy: Neoseiulus cucumeris) is the workhorse predatory mite for thrips programs in protected crops. It was the first predatory mite observed feeding on thrips, and it still anchors most preventive thrips schedules today. The vendor lists Western Flower Thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis), Flower / Eastern Thrips (F. tritici), Onion Thrips (Thrips tabaci), Greenhouse Thrips (Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis), and Melon Thrips (Thrips palmi) as primary targets, with moderate activity on cyclamen mite, tomato russet mite (Aculops lycopersici), and broad mite (Polyphagotarsonemus latus).

Cucumeris feeds on the 1st larval instar of thrips — not adults, not pupae. For season-long control you need to pair AMBLYforce™ C with a soil agent that takes out the pupal stage: Stratiolaelaps scimitus, Dalotia coriaria, or beneficial nematodes. The two together close the loop on the thrips life cycle.

How it works

Cucumeris is a phytoseiid generalist. Larvae are non-predatory; nymphal and adult stages do the hunting. They feed on the first larval instar of thrips and also take pollen, which is what lets them establish in flowering crops before pest pressure builds.

Optimal performance sits at 66–80°F with relative humidity in the 65–72% band — that humidity window matters more than the temperature, because dry sachets stop producing predators. Adult females lay up to 35 eggs over a roughly 4–5 week life span, and juvenile development wraps in about 10 days. Cucumeris is available in bulk shaker tubes for fast knock-down and in slow-release sachets that keep producing predators for 4–5 weeks per sachet.

Storage

Do not cold-store the predatory mites for more than 8 hours. Hold at 55–65°F in moderate humidity until you're ready to release. Never refrigerate sachets, and don't store them in an air-conditioned room or cooler — those conditions dry the sachets out and ruin the breeding population inside.

Instructions of use

Bulk material — tubes or bags

Release in the early or late hours of the day you receive them. If you can't, at least avoid hot, dry times of day. Place tubes or bags on a shelf horizontally for a few hours first — that lets the mites distribute evenly through the carrier. Unscrew the cap, remove the filter paper, replace the lid, then tap mites out evenly onto plant foliage. Whirlybird spreaders and modified leaf-blowers both work for larger areas. URBs (Universal Release Boxes) hung in the canopy let you concentrate releases on hot spots without dusting carrier onto leaves. Leave the open container in the treatment area for 24 hours after release so the slow-emergers can find their way out.

Sachets on a stick — propagation and small plants

Use the stick format for propagation trays and plants too small to support a hook. Put one sachet in the middle of each tray or liner; you can often use one sachet for every other tray when they're touching. For pots and baskets, plant the stick beside the plant so growth wraps around the sachet — just keep the bottom off the soil so the sachet doesn't wick moisture and rot.

Hang the sachet near the stem of the plant. Don't lay them flat on the soil — mold will form underneath, especially in top-watered crops. Very tall or wide plants may need more than one sachet for full coverage.

Monitoring & advisories

Monitor for
  • Falling counts of thrips larvae on the lower leaf surface and inside flowers — the cleanest signal that cucumeris is working.
  • Blue or yellow sticky cards for adult thrips counts. Track week-over-week, not absolute numbers.
  • Tap test: gently shake plants over white paper and count adult and immature thrips that drop.
  • Predatory mites themselves are hard to spot — they're fast-moving, ambush prey, and rarely cluster where the pests are. Look at the pest trend, not the predator.
Advisories
  • Humidity is the limiting factor. Sachets that dry out stop producing — keep them out of direct sun and away from heat sources.
  • Cucumeris hits only the 1st larval instar. Pair with a soil agent (Stratiolaelaps, Dalotia, or beneficial nematodes) for season-long control.
  • Cucumeris will eat eggs of other beneficials — including Phytoseiulus persimilis — so plan introductions and densities carefully when stacking predators.
  • Prolonged moisture or damp environments degrade sachets and encourage mold under hooks.

Life cycle
