What it targets
CALIforce™ is the trade name for Neoseiulus californicus (formerly Amblyseius californicus), the predatory mite most growers reach for when a spider mite population is still low or hasn’t shown up yet. Unlike its sibling Phytoseiulus persimilis — the curative knock-down predator — N. californicus behaves as both a Type-II specialist and Type-III generalist (per UF/IFAS). It develops fastest on two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), but it can hold a crop with little prey, surviving on other mite species, thrips larvae, or pollen until spider mites return.
Within its prey range: T. urticae (primary), carmine mite (T. cinnabarinus), Lewis mite (Eotetranychus lewisi), Banks grass mite (Oligonychus pratensis), European and citrus red mites (Panonychus spp.), plus useful pressure on the microscopic broad mite (Polyphagotarsonemus latus), cyclamen mite (Phytonemus pallidus), and tomato russet mite (Aculops lycopersici). For active spider-mite outbreaks with visible webbing, pair with or substitute Phytoseiulus persimilis; for low-prey-density jobs and preventive cover, californicus is the predator that earns its keep when there’s nothing else to eat.

How it works
Every active life stage of californicus is predatory. Adults prefer spider-mite larvae and nymphs; the larvae focus on eggs. Daily consumption is modest — vendor data puts it at roughly 5 prey per day — but the predator runs the long game: it tolerates warm-dry and cool conditions, it survives gaps between meals, and it will switch to thrips larvae or pollen when spider mites are scarce. That tolerance is what makes “predator-first” releases viable: drop californicus into a clean canopy ahead of pest arrival and the population still holds.
Optimum performance runs between 50–91°F (UF/IFAS), with vendor and GM extending the working range to 50–110°F under favorable conditions. Relative humidity is best at 40–80%, preference toward the upper end. The predator can survive winters as far north as central Florida outdoors, though warmer growing-region performance is more reliable. Females lay an average of about 2 eggs per day (up to 4), totaling ~40 over a roughly 20-day adult life. Egg-to-adult development runs as short as four days when conditions are warm.
Predator-first releases on strawberry
UF/IFAS reports that a “predator-first” release — low-rate N. californicus ahead of detectable spider mite pressure — has become standard in California strawberry programs. Once mites are present, the targeted ratio is one female californicus per ten two-spotted spider mites. The practical version on most crops: scout early, release at the low rate before webbing appears, and let the predator hold the line through season.

Don’t hold predatory mites longer than 8 hours. Keep the container at a moderately humid 55–65°F until release. Do not refrigerate — cold-shock is more damaging here than a few hours at room temperature.
Instructions of use
Bottles & tubes with carrier
Hold the container on its side in a warm area for at least 30 minutes before release so the mites warm up and redistribute through the carrier. Tumble gently to even out the population, then open the container in the crop and tap the contents onto the foliage of the heaviest spots. Concentrate the bulk at hot spots and reserve some for a sweep across milder pressure. Leave the container in the treatment area for 24 hours after release so any remaining mites can climb out and find the canopy. A light foliar misting just before release can help — it’s optional, not required.
Slow-release sachets
CALIforce™ C also ships in 100-count or 500-count sachets on plastic hooks, with a bran carrier and all life stages of the predator inside. Hang one sachet per plant or every few plants depending on canopy size and pest pressure. The bran carrier supports a small breeding population, so californicus emerges from the sachet slowly over weeks, giving a long-tail release rather than a single drop. Sachets are the cleanest format for preventive programs and for crops with continuous low-level pressure.
Setting up for success
Avoid releasing in the heat of the day. Touching plant canopies help californicus disperse; smooth, low-hair leaf surfaces and connected rows are ideal. Dust suppresses phytoseiids — if the crop is dusty, hose the plants down or run overhead irrigation before releasing. Flowering insectary plants nearby give californicus pollen to fall back on when prey thin out, which is exactly the alternate-food behavior that makes the predator-first technique work.
Monitoring & advisories
- Reduced spider-mite counts — the most reliable signal that the predators are working. Seeing californicus itself is hard; the predator is small (0.1 mm) and fast.
- Reduced webbing where the crop had two-spotted spider mite pressure. On low-prey jobs, you may not see webbing change — track mite counts on the leaf underside instead.
- Translucent pale-orange, peach, or pink mites running across the leaf under a 10× hand lens.
- Football-shaped pale-whitish eggs attached to leaf hairs, especially on strawberry — californicus places them in the canopy where prey are likely to appear.
- Falling broad-mite and russet-mite signs on the upper canopy if those were part of the target.
- Not the right pick for moderate-to-heavy spider mite outbreaks — for those, switch to Phytoseiulus persimilis for fast knock-down and consider stacking californicus afterward for residual control.
- Soil mites are a different category; californicus is a foliar predator and won’t address soil-dwelling fungus or thrips pupae populations.
- Spider mites don’t fly. They crawl and ride air currents, equipment, and clothing — restrict movement through hot spots and quarantine incoming plants.
- Persistent broad-spectrum insecticide residues will kill the predator. Allow at least four weeks between insecticide use and release, and avoid known-lethal classes near the release window.
- Dust on the canopy reduces predator performance noticeably; manage dust by hosing plants or running overhead irrigation periodically.

Life cycle
The Neoseiulus californicus life cycle runs egg → larva → protonymph → deutonymph → adult. Total development takes as little as four days under warm conditions and as long as twelve days when cooler. Adults live around 20 days and lay ~2 eggs per day on average, up to 4.
