What it targets

Diglyphus isaea is the warm-weather parasitoid wasp growers reach for biological leafminer control in greenhouses, fields, interiorscapes, orchards, and gardens. These 1.5–2 mm Eulophid mini-wasps are most effective preventively against several Agromyzidae leafminers — including Liriomyza spp. (the American serpentine and pea leafminers among them) and the Chrysanthemum Leafminer (Chromatomyia [= Phytomyza] syngenesiae). They can also clean up minor infestations, and once established they can hold a crop through the rest of the growing season.

Diglyphus parasitoid wasps ship as pre-hatched, pre-fed adults — ready to release. They're the product of choice when leafminer damage is first seen, or soon expected to be seen, in a warm-weather zone. Diglyphus isaea parasitizes at least 18 different Agromyzidae species in the published host range, so leafminer ID at the species level isn't a release prerequisite. Pair Diglyphus releases with yellow sticky traps for monitoring (with the management caveat in §06 — they catch parasitoids as well as leafminer adults).

How it works

Diglyphus isaea works the inside of the leaf mine. The adult female inserts her ovipositor through the leaf surface into the active mine, punctures the leafmining fly larva with her ovipositor, and injects a paralyzing venom. The larva stops feeding immediately. She then lays one to several eggs (the GreenMethods source notes 1–5; the lifetime total can reach around 50 eggs) directly on or adjacent to the paralyzed host. The eggs hatch into wasp larvae that consume the leafminer larva from the outside in — ectoparasitism, as opposed to the inside-out style of Aphidius or Encarsia.

Adult Diglyphus also host-feed: alongside oviposition, the female punctures additional leafmining larvae and feeds on the body contents that exude. A single adult Diglyphus isaea wasp can kill several dozen fly larvae by host-feeding across her lifetime — in addition to the eggs she lays that develop into the next generation of fly-killing larvae. That double mechanism, parasitism plus host-feeding, is what makes the impact-per-wasp so high.

When the mature wasp larva (prepupa) is ready to pupate, it excretes about six pellets of black meconium that surround its pupation site. These pellets act as small pillars that hold the upper and lower leaf surfaces apart — the visible scouting signature growers call "pupal tombs" or "fecal pillars." The Diglyphus pupa lies naked in the mine, near the shrunken skin of the leafminer larva it consumed. The immature stages take roughly two weeks; adults live about three more weeks. Optimal performance sits at 75–90°F with relative humidity around 80%.

Storage

Release Diglyphus isaea as soon as possible after receipt. The product ships as pre-hatched, pre-fed adults — every day of cold-chain delay costs you population. If a brief hold is unavoidable, keep the container cool, dark, and out of temperature extremes until release.

Instructions of use

Adult release — bottle

Open the bottle inside the crop near active leafminer damage. Let the adult Diglyphus parasitoid wasps fly off on their own; a gentle tap encourages the slow ones. Release in the cool of the morning or evening, not at the heat of the day. Leave the open container in the treatment area for an hour or so to give every wasp a chance to exit.

Two introductions, one week apart

The vendor's standard pattern is two releases spaced a week apart at the preventive rate. The first release intercepts existing larvae in mines; the second backstops the females that emerged from the first batch with fresh ovipositing adults while the early-mine cohort is still vulnerable. Skip the second release and you give the leafminer population time to reset.

Where to release

Concentrate releases near visible leafminer damage and along the perimeter of the affected block. Diglyphus adults are strong fliers and will spread from the release point, but they work most efficiently when adults emerge into an active mining zone where eggs and larvae are already in the leaves.

Monitoring & advisories

Monitor for
  • Falling fresh-mine counts on susceptible foliage in the 7–14 days after the first release — the cleanest outcome metric for biological leafminer control.
  • Loose dark fecal matter inside or beside active mines — a sign Diglyphus has paralyzed and host-fed on a leafminer larva.
  • The "fecal pillars" or pupal tombs — about six dark meconium pellets arranged around a naked pupa in a mine. Backlight the wider end of a mine and a Diglyphus larva or pupa may be visible through the leaf surface.
  • If used preventively, the outcome to track is a pest no-show — fresh mines that don't appear at all.
Advisories
  • Yellow sticky traps will catch Diglyphus. If you're running them for leafminer adult monitoring, watch parasitoid bycatch closely. If too many wasps are landing on the cards, remove the traps or run them only two or three days a week so the Diglyphus population isn't being drained.
  • Diglyphus prefers warm weather. Below the optimal 75–90°F band parasitism slows; below the low-60s it largely stalls.
  • Control ants ahead of release — they harass natural enemies of leafminers along with everything else.
  • Avoid broad-spectrum, persistent insecticides on the crop before and during release. They suppress Diglyphus along with the leafminer adults you're trying to manage.
  • Provide flowering insectary plants where practical — adult parasitoid wasps host-feed on fly larvae but also draw energy from floral nectar.

Diglyphus reproduces in the crop once introduced. The published rates are an entry point; once the parasitoid population establishes it can hold a crop for the rest of the growing season as long as the rest of the program supports it.

Cannabis Alert

Conventional release rates are usually not sufficient for cannabis growers. We recommend you double the rate or contact us for personalized help — leafminer damage is uncommon in cannabis but does turn up in greenhouse vegetative rooms with ornamental cover crops or open ventilation. Life cycle

Diglyphus isaea runs egg → three larval instars → pupa → adult. Every stage except the adult develops inside the leafminer's mine. Egg-to-adult takes about two weeks in warm conditions; adults live about three weeks. With multiple generations per year, the parasitoid can establish a working population in the crop after a single set of releases.
