Swirskii for Whitefly Control
What it targets
Amblyseius swirskii is a heat-tolerant predatory mite reached for when whitefly and thrips pressure are climbing at the same time. The vendor lists Greenhouse Whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum), Tobacco / Sweet Potato Whitefly (Bemisia tabaci), certain thrips species, two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), and tarsonemid mites as accepted prey. The action point against thrips is the 1st and 2nd larval instars; against whitefly it is the eggs and 1st larval instar — before honeydew has had time to coat the leaf.
Swirskii is the workhorse in pollen-bearing crops because it can establish before pest pressure arrives: pollen alone sustains it. Pair it with Amblyseius cucumeris on thrips-dominant blocks if you want depth on the thrips life cycle, or with Encarsia formosa in tomato or poinsettia houses where greenhouse whitefly is the headline pest. A note for cool-climate growers: swirskii goes dormant below ~59°F, so it is not a stand-alone solution for unheated houses in winter.

How it works
Amblyseius swirskii is polyphagous — it switches between whitefly eggs and 1st larvae, thrips larvae, spider mite eggs, tarsonemids, and pollen. That diet flexibility is what lets a release of swirskii hold a population for weeks before prey shows up. Once prey is established, females lay up to 38 eggs over a 3–4 week adult life and the population can climb fast.
Swirskii performs across a wide temperature window — the vendor records full development from 15–37.5°C (59–100°F), with peak survival and shortest egg-to-adult time at 25–30°C (77–86°F). It tolerates greenhouse heat that stalls Phytoseiulus persimilis, which is why summer pepper and cucumber houses lean on swirskii. The catch: humidity at the leaf surface needs to stay reasonably high — if eggs dry out they don't hatch and you're back to depending on whatever adults you released. Aim for roughly 70% microclimate humidity on the underside of leaves.

Do not cold-store the predatory mites for more than 8 hours. Hold at 55–65°F in moderate humidity until release. Never refrigerate sachets, and don't store them in an air-conditioned room or cooler — those conditions dry the sachets out and ruin the breeding population inside. If unavoidable storage is needed, hold sachets at 60°F — many growers slide the box under a greenhouse bench in the coolest spot, with the box open so CO₂ doesn't build up and suffocate the mites.
Instructions of use
Bulk material — tubes or bags
Release in the early or late hours of the day you receive them. If you can't, at least avoid hot, dry times of day. Place tubes or bags on a shelf horizontally for a few hours first so the mites distribute evenly through the carrier. Unscrew the cap, remove the filter paper, replace the lid, then tap mites out evenly onto plant foliage. Whirlybird spreaders and modified leaf-blowers both work for larger areas. URBs (Universal Release Boxes) hung in the canopy let you concentrate releases on hot spots without dusting carrier onto leaves. Leave the open container in the treatment area for 24 hours after release so slow-emergers can find their way out.
Sachets on a stick — propagation and small plants
Use the stick format for propagation trays and plants too small to support a hook. Put one sachet in the middle of each tray or liner; you can often use one sachet for every other tray when they're touching. For pots and baskets, plant the stick beside the plant so growth wraps around the sachet — just keep the bottom off the soil so the sachet doesn't wick moisture and rot.
Sachets on a hook — larger plants
Hang the sachet near the stem of the plant. Don't lay them flat on the soil — mold will form underneath, especially in top-watered crops. Very tall or wide plants may need more than one sachet for full coverage.
Monitoring & advisories
- Drop in whitefly nymph counts on the lower leaf surface week-over-week — the cleanest signal that swirskii is working.
- Stalked eggs along leaf veins and between hairs (use magnification). They look like the eggs of other phytoseiids, so don't try to ID swirskii vs. cucumeris by sight if both are in the crop.
- Yellow sticky cards for adult whitefly counts — track the trend, not absolute numbers.
- Falling pressure 7–10 days after release. Phytoseiids hide; let the pest trend do the scouting.
- Humidity is the constraint. Sachets that dry out stop producing — keep them out of direct sun and supplement microclimate humidity (misting, damped paths) if conditions go below 70%.
- Swirskii is inactive below ~59°F and will not survive frosts. It's an eastern Mediterranean species — not for unheated houses in winter.
- Use caution alongside Phytoseiulus persimilis or Aphidoletes aphidimyza; intraguild predation is possible.
- Clean up heavy honeydew deposits and excessive spider-mite webbing before release — swirskii avoids both and performance suffers.
- Newly introduced or off-peak releases may need supplementation with another predator or parasitoid until the population establishes.

Life cycle
Swirskii runs egg → non-predatory larva → protonymph → deutonymph → adult. Juvenile development wraps within ~10 days; adults live another 3–4 weeks. Development from egg to adult is mainly diet-driven — mites feeding on live prey develop faster than mites feeding on pollen.
Disclosures

Some agents need a steady pest food source, others need alternate food (pollen, nectar), others have specific photoperiod requirements. Because of these variables, long- or short-term establishment of BCAs cannot be guaranteed after release, and refunds, discounts, or credits are not offered on products that have already been released.
