What it targets

SuffOil-X® is a pre-emulsified, highly refined paraffinic spray oil from BioWorks — an OMRI-listed insecticide, miticide, and fungicide all in one bottle. Sprayed onto a leaf, the oil coats and suffocates eggs, larvae, nymphs, and adults of soft-bodied pests. The label covers a broad range: aphids, adelgids, armored scales, cankerworms, eriophyid mites, leafhoppers, leafrollers, leaf tiers, mealybugs, plant bugs, psyllids, soft scales, spider mites, webworms, and whiteflies. On the disease side, it suppresses powdery mildew and prevents fungal mycelia from attaching to the leaf, plus interferes with insect-vectored plant viruses.

Where SuffOil-X earns its keep against other horticultural oils is droplet size and emulsification. The pre-emulsification process drops the oil particle from roughly 700 microns to about 50 — about 1/14th the size — which lets a thinner, more uniform coating do the same suffocation work with less petroleum on the leaf. Faster dry times, less stomata blockage, lower magnification of sunlight, and dramatically reduced phytotoxicity. Pair it with a labelled pesticide where you need a chemical layer, or rotate it into an IPM program alongside parasitoid wasps, lacewing larvae, or predatory mites — SuffOil-X is gentle on most beneficials once the spray has dried.

How it works

The mode of action is physical, not chemical. The oil film blocks the spiracles — the breathing holes along an insect's body — and the soft pest suffocates. Eggs are hit the same way: the coating prevents gas exchange through the egg membrane and the embryo can't develop. Because the kill is mechanical, pests don't develop resistance to oils the way they do to chemical insecticides, which makes SuffOil-X a useful rotation partner in any program.

For powdery mildew and fungal pressure, the oil sits on the leaf surface and prevents mycelia from attaching — a preventive layer rather than a curative. And because the residue is non-toxic and odorless once dry, SuffOil-X integrates cleanly with predatory mites, parasitoid wasps, and other biological controls that you've worked hard to establish. Coverage is everything: oils only kill what they coat, so a pass that misses the underside of leaves misses the pest hiding there.

Packaging & storage

SuffOil-X ships in 2.5-gallon and 30-gallon containers. Because the formulation is pre-emulsified, it doesn't separate in the bottle or in the spray tank — no rigorous agitation needed to keep the emulsion homogenous. Store the closed container in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight; once mixed, the dilution stays uniform in the tank for many hours, so a single batch covers a long spray window without re-mixing.

Mixing & application

Standard mix — foliar spray

Mix 1–2 gallons of SuffOil-X per 100 gallons of water. The pre-emulsification handles hard water without separation, so no special mixing order is required — add to the tank and agitate briefly. Spray to complete coverage of the foliage, paying particular attention to the underside of leaves and dense canopy spots where pests shelter.

Mature trees & orchard

Most mature trees take 20 to 500 gallons of spray solution per acre depending on canopy density. Use high-volume spray gear for full coverage; SuffOil-X works in both high- and low-pressure applications.

Row crops

Row crops generally take 20 to 100 gallons of spray per acre. Apply as needed for the target pest pressure; repeat applications cover only what's present at the time of spray since oils have no residual activity.

Compatibility & advisories

Best practice

Apply when temperatures are moderate (avoid the heat of the day). Oil + heat + bright sun is where phytotoxicity risk lives.
Spray to full coverage, especially the underside of leaves — oils kill only what they coat. No residual.
Test on a small area before full application on a new cultivar or in unusual weather conditions.
Use as a rotation partner with biological controls and labelled chemistries — the mechanical mode of action sidesteps insecticide-resistance issues.

Advisories & tank-mix limits

Do NOT tank-mix with sulfur-containing products — Captan™, Folpet, Oxythioquinox (Morestan™), or any other sulfur formulation. Phytotoxicity is severe.
Do NOT use with Carbaryl (Sevin™) or Dimethoate (Cygon™).
Do not tank-mix with NPK foliar fertilizers.
Only tank-mix with products whose label specifically allows the use of oils. When in doubt, read both labels and call the manufacturer.
Some ornamentals are oil-sensitive: the bloom on Colorado Blue Spruce and Koster Spruce can come off; use caution and reduced dosage on summer applications to Japanese Red Maple, Amur Maple, Black Walnut; and on dormant applications to Sugar Maple and Redbud.

Cannabis Alert

SuffOil-X is OMRI listed and works for cannabis aphid, spider mite, and powdery mildew pressure — but timing matters more than rate. Apply during vegetative growth or the very early flower window only; do not apply during late flower / pre-harvest as the oil coating affects trichome appearance and terpene volatiles.
