Product Description

Aphidoletes aphidimyza: Powerful Biocontrol for Aphids

Looking for a natural solution to manage aphid outbreaks? Aphidoletes aphidimyza, the active organism in APHIDOLETESforce™, is a predatory midge whose larvae feed on over 60 species of aphids. These beneficial insects are especially effective in outdoor crops and greenhouses where aphids are already present.

How Aphidoletes aphidimyza Works

Adult midges are harmless, mosquito-like flies that seek out spider webs to mate before laying up to 250 eggs in aphid colonies. After hatching, their bright orange larvae begin feeding on aphids by injecting a paralyzing toxin and then consuming them. Often, they kill more aphids than they eat. These larvae are easy to spot under leaves thanks to their color and are most effective between 64–77°F with relative humidity over 70%.

Targets Multiple Aphid Species

  • Green Peach Aphid (Myzus persicae)
  • Melon/Cotton Aphid (Aphis gossypii)
  • Potato Aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae)
  • Foxglove Aphid (Aulacorthum solani)
  • Cannabis Aphid (Phorodon cannabis)

Best Used On These Crops

  • Ornamentals
  • Hemp/Cannabis (outdoor use only)
  • Vegetables
  • Soft Fruits
  • Tree Nursery Stock

Ideal for Use In

  • Greenhouses
  • Field Crops
  • Home Gardens

Instructions for Use

Release APHIDOLETESforce™ when aphids are first detected. Most midges will still be in the pupal stage; leave the bottle open or gently shake to release emerged adults. Pupae can be placed on moist soil. Avoid releasing near yellow sticky traps—use blue instead.

Storage Guidelines

Use immediately upon receipt. If necessary, store at 42–50°F and use by the printed expiration date.

Monitoring Tips

  • Watch for adult midges flying in early evening
  • Look for females on spider webs and males flying nearby
  • Bright orange larvae visible under infested leaves
  • Shriveling aphids and lower pest counts signal success

Important Advisories

  • Avoid use indoors or when day length is under 12 hours
  • Don’t combine with Chrysoperla or Amblyseius swirskii
  • Control ants before release—aphids produce honeydew that ants protect
  • Pupation occurs in soil; no establishment in hydroponic setups

Release instructions for the use of Aphidoletes aphidimyza

If the pupae shipped have not yet begun to emerge, you may temporarily store these predators at 75-95°F (higher is faster) in a highly humid, shaded location until emergence begins (check twice daily). When the midges have begun to emerge, or if they arrive pre-emerged, release them at sundown the same day.

Bottle: Put small piles of the carrier material directly onto the growing medium or moist capillary matting. Or divide the mixture into small pots containing moist peat or vermiculite and distribute these throughout the crop.

Blister pack: Open the blister pack by pulling the tab on the back in or near the foliage of the infested plants or canopy of trees. Hang some of the blisters in or adjacent to aphid colonies, but place others in areas without obvious infestation. Emerging adults will then fly out into the crop and locate aphid colonies. This predator should not be used with parasitic nematodes.
Do not store the emerged adult midges in the tray for more than 4 hours. Hold at a very humid 60-65°F. Do not cold-store the midges’ pupae for more than 5 days. Hold at a moderately humid 45-50°F (fridge best).
